Chutzpah… without the kitchen

us-en-9-day-pak-2013-800Maybe it’s just the latest trend, but since I’ve returned to work, I can’t count the number of conversations I’ve had with other moms about doing a juice cleanse. A few who have done it swear by it, saying that it’s not the weight loss (which is obviously not maintainable) but rather the feeling of getting a “system reset” that draws them in.

Who wouldn’t like a system reset, especially when we’re all carrying a little winter weight? I asked my trainer, Lindsay, what she thought about it, and having done one herself, she said the juice cleanse, in a nutshell, was pure torture. Instead, she recommended the Isagenix system, and after some eye rolls from my husband and a lot of mental pep talks contemplating going without any substantial food for a few days, I decided to jump in and give it a try.

To save you all the $226 I have just spent, or to endorse the system (who knows which way it’ll go?!), I will review each day and let you know how it is going.

PRE CLEANSE

With the Isagenix system, you do a 2 day “deep cleanse”, which includes drinking “cleanse for life” 4 times a day, a few “snacks!” (glorified fish food tablets: see below), a few squares of their special Isadelights green tea infused chocolate, unlimited water and herbal tea, and only if absolutely necessary, 1/4 of an apple or some celery. The deep cleanse is followed by 5 shake days, which actually sound pretty simple: Isalean shakes to replace 2 of your meals, one normal healthy meal, and some snacks like 6 unsalted almonds, apple, or some of the Isadelight chocolates. Then, to wrap it all up, you torture yourself with two more deep cleanse days.

Isagenix recommends having a shake to replace a meal for two days before you begin their 9 day system, as a “pre-cleanse”, and I have to say, the shakes were pretty decent tasting and quite filling. Each shake is made up of 2 scoops of the powder and 8oz of water, and I couldn’t finish it on day 1 of the pre-cleanse, so I cut it down to 1.5 scoops and 6oz of water on day 2 and that seemed to work well.

I have to say, I’m slightly terrified and think this will take more mental stamina than anything else to get through these next 48 hours. Lindsay was nice enough to offer to do the system along with me, so I will have someone to commiserate with, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up hangrier than a Jew on the 7th “adonai who ha elohim” during the Neilah service on Yom Kippur.
